LINCOLN – It’s over.
Lincoln High’s incredible and season-spanning winning streak can officially mentioned in past terms after Tolman staged a 6-2 victory over the two-time defending state champs Thursday afternoon at Saylesville’s Sullivan Field. It officially goes into the record books as a 44-game winning streak for the Lions.
The end of a successful run was made possible due to a pair of Tolman home runs that ended up accounting for five of the team’s six runs. Junior Leiandra Wilson smacked a two-run shot as part of the Tigers’ three-run uprising in the fifth inning while freshman Megan Salzillo connected for a three-run shot an inning later.
The game was scoreless through four innings before Tolman broke through in the fifth. Another first-year varsity player for the Tigers delivered the game’s first run as Hope Caliri delivered a run-scoring single.
Up a three-spot following Wilson’s poke, Tolman extended its lead to 6-0 in the sixth. Base hits by sophomores Kaylee Moline-Vaz and Emily Truesdale set the stage for Salzillo, who connected for Tolman’s second homer of the contest.
The Lions got two runs back in the home portion of the sixth behind two singles and a Tolman error. The home team did not threaten in the seventh.
Not only did Salzillo come through offensively, she did the job on the mound. Lincoln recorded just four hits with Salzillo finishing with one walk and one strikeout. Caliri had a big day as the first-year varsity player went 4-for-4 with two singles, two doubles and one RBI.
“The kids have been working hard and it paid off today,” noted Tolman mentor Craig Giarrusso after his squad improved its Division I record to 2-1 (the Tigers captured three league contests last season).
Now 1-1 on the young season, Lincoln received five innings of three-run ball from starter Alyssa Schermerhorn, who struck out four.
“The better team won, they outplayed us in every aspect,” said Lincoln head coach Dick Ryan. “It takes some pressure off of us, but we have some work to do.”
