Sr. Blanche Laurence
MARLBOROUGH - Sr. Blanche Laurence, a Sister of St. Anne, known in religion as Sister Mary Laurentine, died at the age of 100 at Marie Esther Health Center in this city on September 1, 2013. She was in the 81st year of vowed religious life.
She was the daughter of Cleophas and Rose Delima (Brousseau) Laurence of Central Falls, RI. She completed her elementary education in that city, received her high school education at Notre Dame High School, Central Falls, and graduated from St. Anns Academy, Marlborough, MA. Sister also studied at Catholic Teachers College, College of St. Rose in Albany, NY, and Anna Maria College, Paxton. She held a B.A. degree and received her License in Pharmacy from the Western Massachusetts School of Pharmacy.
In 1930, she joined the Sisters of St. Anne in Lachine, Quebec, and professed first vows in 1932. She was assigned to St. Angeles Boarding School, Montreal, for two years before being transferred to the United States. Twenty-two years of Sister Blanches teaching career were spent in Central Falls, RI, at St. Matthews and Notre Dame Schools, and at St. Matthew/Notre Dame Consolidated School. She also taught at St. Ann Academy, Marlborough, and at Precious Blood High School, Holyoke, where she spent 13 consecutive years. She then returned to Montreal where she worked as a pharmacist at the Motherhouse of the Congregation in Lachine, Quebec. She served as treasurer for the Lachine Boarding School, staffed by the Sisters of St. Anne. She returned to the United States and served as Aide and Coordinator at St. Anne Infirmary, Marlborough. Failing health obliged her to transfer to Marie Esther Health Center at the same address.
Sister is survived by her sister-in-law, Mrs. Helen Laurence of Pawtucket, RI, and nieces and nephews.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday September 5at 10:00 am in the convent chapel with burial in Saint Marys Cemetery, Marlborough. She will be waked at St. Anne Convent, 720 Boston Post Road, Marlborough on Wednesday September 4 from 2 to 4 p.m. with a prayer service at 4 p.m.
