EAST PROVIDENCE – Acting City Manager Paul Lemont has confirmed that Major Christopher Parella will take over as interim police chief when Police Chief Joseph Tavares officially leaves his post on Tuesday.
Lemont had said in previous press interviews that his plan was to name an interim chief. But until this week he would not say whether or not the acting chief would be from within or outside the Police Department.
Parella’s, who is the department’s second highest-ranking officer, previously assumed command on a temporary basis when Tavares was placed on administrative leave last year by former City Manager Peter Graczykowski.
