PAWTUCKET â In a concerted effort to improve efficiencies within and between city departments and to ultimately serve the public better, city department heads recently took part in a three-hour âLean Officeâ training session based on proven management principles used globally for many years across a number of top businesses and industries.
The session, held in the Blackstone Valley Visitor Center auditorium, was conducted by Leslie Taito of the Office of Management and Budget, a new office created last year under the state Department of Administration by Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee to increase the efficiency of state government.
The training session was provided pursuant to a special request to the Office of Regulatory Reform, which is part of OMB, by Mayor Donald R. Grebien for assistance on ways to help improve the processes of city government.
âWe will be implementing these methods throughout our city departments to help us operate in ways that will streamline our ability to better serve our customers, the public,â Grebien said. âLeslie is an outstanding guide who keys right in on areas that need improvement and how everything needs to fit together. âLean Officeâ is not just about doing more with less, as we need to do every day in our financially challenged city, but about doing things better for the benefit of our employees and the public we serve.â
Taito defined âleanâ as âa systematic approachâ to eliminating activities that do not contribute to a better end product, and as a process of âcontinuous improvementâ that flows services toward âthe pull of the customer.â
