Obama taps ex-Pawtucket senator for federal post

July 16, 2014

PROVIDENCE – Thomas Coderre, former state senator from Pawtucket and now the chief of staff to Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed, is leaving his Statehouse job to take a position with the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Coderre overcame his own high-profile troubles with substance abuse nearly a dozen years ago and became active in substance abuse treatment advocacy. He served as the board chair for Rhode Island Communities for Addiction Recovery Efforts (RICARES), and was National Field Director of Faces & Voices of Recovery, based in Washington, D.C.

Beginning Aug. 25, Coderre will serve as senior adviser to the administrator of SAMHSA, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
