CUMBERLAND - Natividade Lopes, 100, of Broad St., passed away Wednesday in the Trinity Health & Rehabilitation Center, Woonsocket. She was the beloved wife of the late Joao Lopes.
Born in Insua, Portugal she was the daughter of the late Antonio and Maria deJesus (Vinagre) Rebelo. She came to this country at the age of 15 first living in Fall River then Central Falls and settling in Cumberland for the past 70 years.
She was the founder of the family business, Lopes & Sons, Cumberland a renowned purveyor of home made varieties of portuguese sausages for many years in the Valley Falls area of town.
Mrs. Lopes was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church and was active for many years with the Christmas Bazaar and church choir. She was also a member of the Clube Juventude Lusitana, St. Aidan Seniors both of Cumberland and the Uniao Benificente, Pawtucket.
She leaves two children, Maria C. Gouveia, her late husband Joe and John J. Lopes and his wife Leonor all of Cumberland. Mrs. Lopes also leaves 6 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Brilhantina Teixeira and Jose Rebelo.
A celebration of her life will be held Tuesday at 9 a.m. from the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Rd. Rte. 122, Cumberland. Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Fatima Dr., Cumberland. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cumberland. Relatives and friends are kindly invited.
