Mitsmenn pitches Collette to victory in third-straight must-win game with gem against top-seeded Post 74
WEST WARWICK – With Collette Vacations Post 79 facing their third-straight elimination game on Tuesday, Zach Mitsmenn dazzled the tournament’s top-seeded squad for nine innings, sending home the highly-touted Senerchia Post 74 and propelling Collette into the final day of play at the R.I. American Legion Senior Division Tournament.
Mitsmenn scattered nine hits and two walks while striking out 12 in a complete-game outing to propel No. 3-seed Post 79 to a 3-1 upset win before 100 or so fans at McCarthy Field.
Mitsmenn more than made up for a less-lustrous performance on the hill Monday, when the southpaw allowed four runs and lasted only one inning against New England Frozen Lemonade/Shields Post 43 of Warwick.
Skipper Jim Mello wisely chose to pull Mitsmenn to let him fight another day, and replaced him with fellow St. Raphael Academy product Ben Roy, who pitched seven strong innings to help Collette stay in the game and mount a wild late-inning comeback.
Tuesday’s win means Collette will face either Gershkoff/Auburn-Post 20 of Cranston or R&R Construction-Post 18 of Newport today at 4 p.m. Should Post 79 (now 16-10 overall) win that, it would play for the state championship against one of those same two teams at 7 p.m. at the same site.
