COCOA BEACH, FL - Marie Eleanor (Betters) Durocher of Cocoa Beach, FL passed away peacefully in Belchertown, MA on January 6, 2013 in the care of her daughter, Colleen, and Hospice. Marie was born March 30, 1922 in Barrington, Rhode Island to Bridget (Coyle) Betters of Ireland and John Lemieux Betters of Vermont. She took great pride in her work as a nurse and in raising 3 children. She earned her RN from Memorial Hospital in Pawtucket, RI and worked for Pawtucket Visiting Nurses, combining her love of nursing and teaching for 45 years until her retirement in 1986. She then moved to Cocoa Beach, FL where she enjoyed her friends, volunteering and the warmer weather.
Marie was an active communicant at Our Saviour's Parish in Cocoa Beach, and a volunteer with Birthright and St. Vincent De Paul, working with people in need in the community. She was also a member of the Franciscans for 67 years. Marie's passion for the outdoors was passed to her children. A favorite memory was her cross-country camping trip with her daughter and she travelled frequently with her cousin, Alice Coyle and niece Pat Gazaw, also nurses. She was a great cake decorator and praised for her Irish Soda Bread right up to the end. Marie loved the changing seasons and made frequent trips back to New England. She enjoyed time with family in the Belchertown, MA area where she visited her daughter, Colleen Durocher and partner Martha Shea.
In addition to her daughter, Marie leaves her son, John Durocher and his significant-other Rikka Arnold of Oakland, CA. Her son, David, sadly predeceased her in 1982. She also leaves her beloved niece Patricia Basiliere Gazaw and nephew and godson William Basiliere. Many great-nieces and nephews will miss Marie.
Memorial masses will be held in three communities: February 2, 2013, 11:00 am at St Francis, Belchertown, MA; February 18, 2013, 10:30am at Our Saviour, Cocoa Beach, Fl; and March 23, 2013 10:00 am at St. Teresa, Pawtucket, RI.
