December 24, 2013

A 21-year-old man, identified as Ryan Almeida, was found lying injured and shot outside the rear of this apartment building at 90 Leonard Jenard Dr. in the Galego Court housing complex on Tuesday at around 5 a.m. He later died at Rhode Island Hospital from his injuries. Pawtucket Police are seeking help from the public in locating a suspect.

PAWTUCKET—Pawtucket Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 21-year-old man who was found lying injured on the ground in front of a building at the Galego Court housing complex early Tuesday morning.

According to Major Arthur Martins, at approximately 5 a.m., Pawtucket Police were called to the area of 90 Leonard Jenard Dr. in response to a shooting. Officers found a male victim lying on the ground outside that address who appeared to have at least one gunshot wound. The victim was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where he later died as a result of the injuries.

Police have identified the victim as Ryan Almeida, who they say has addresses in both Pawtucket and Providence. Almeida's mother lives at Galego Court and he sometimes stayed at her apartment, but he also lived in Providence, Martins said.

Martins said that this was the first contact that Almeida had with Pawtucket Police. Statewide court records show his only previous infraction was apparently for an outstanding warrant for driving with an expired license issued by Central Falls Police in October.

Martins said that police so far have no motive or suspects in the shooting, but that the investigation is ongoing.

Several other residents turned away or declined to comment about the December 24 shooting in the public housing complex off Weeden Street. Later that morning, a group of about a half dozen young men and a woman were seen leaving the building near where Almeida was found. When asked if they knew the victim, one replied that the news reporters “should leave now” and another said to “come back in a couple of weeks” when there might be something to say.

Just a block up the street from Galego Court, the Woodlawn Catholic Regional School's outdoor marquee offered the seasonal message: “Peace on Earth, Good Will to All.

Anyone with information concerning this crime is asked to contact the Pawtucket Police Department at 401-727-9100 and ask for Sgt. Brandley (ext. 740), Det. Rosciti (ext. 737) or Det. Silva (Ext. 760).
