MILFORD, DE - Leesona "Lee" Dougherty passed away November 24, 2012 at The Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, DE. She was 72.
She was born July 9, 1940 in North Attleboro, MA to the late William Stack and Loretta (Gauthier) Stack Grimley. She attended and graduated from Tolman High School in Pawtucket, RI in 1958. Many of the friendships that she made while growing up in New England endured throughout her lifetime.
Lee worked her entire Civil Service career at Dover AFB. She began her 32-year career working as a cashier at the commissary and progressed to management positions in the 436th Civil Engineering Squadron before her retirement in 2003. In 1994, Lee was named the Air Mobility Command Military Personnel Civilian Specialist of the year. During her time at the base and due to her compassion, she earned the nickname "Mother Superior" as she always looked out for young airmen who needed mothering or a place to spend the holidays.
In 2007, Lee joined The Worship Christian Center where she enjoyed spending Sundays with her son and Larry and Denise Solomon, exceptionally close friends who she considered family. The following year, she moved to Luther Towers, where she expanded her circle of friends even more. She considered several of them dear friends despite not having seen several of them recently, to include Helen, Pauline, Ruth Ann and Lillian.
Lee was a die-hard Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots and enjoyed watching games with her family. She was also an avid reader and could always be found with a book by her side. She enjoyed playing bunco and bingo with her friends at Luther Towers and providing desserts for other players. Most of all, Lee enjoyed spending time with her family. She was most proud of her children and grand-children and took pride in their every accomplishment as well as attended every event they participated in. She never hesitated to encourage and support them in every endeavor and did the same for her children's friends.
Lee was preceded in death by her parents and her only son, Shawn "Doc" Dougherty, who died in 2008. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kelly and Carl Mears, of Milford. She is also survived by her other daughter, Erin Sebastian, of Dover. Lee is also survived by her one and most favorite grandson, Mark Schafer of Dover, and his wife, Tobi. Also, three grand-daughters who will carry on her sense of wit and humor, Ashley Mears Hickman of Milford and Emily and Tori Sebastian of Dover. Lastly, Lee was fortunate enough to have shared several years with her two great-grandchildren, Trent and Peyton Schafer, also of Dover.
A viewing will be held on Monday December 3, 2012 from 12-2 at Torbert Funeral Home, 1145 E. Lebanon Road, (Rt.10), in Dover. Services will immediately follow with Pastor Harry from The Worship Christian Center officiating. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Cross Church, Dover, at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to a favorite charity or The Delaware Hospice Center.
