EAST PROVIDENCE – Police have made two arrests in connection with Sunday’s
shooting at Onna Moniz John Park, but are not releasing the names of the
suspects until later this afternoon pending further investigation,
according to police Lt. Michael David.
“We have two individuals in custody,” David said. "The quick arrests in
this are a direct result of police officers being familiar with the
community in which they work and inter agency cooperation."
Meanwhile, the 22-year-old victim in the shooting was being listed today
in critical, but stable condition at Rhode Island Hospital where he
underwent surgery on Sunday.
On Sunday, police say a basketball court at the park was the scene of a
fight between two men that led to one of them being shot multiple times,
according to police.
According to witness reports, the two men got into an argument during a
pick-up basketball game involving four men in the park, which then
escalated into a fight.
One of the men left the basketball court and then returned with a gun. At
that point, the 22-year-old victim ran to his car at the corner of John
and McCausland Streets where he was shot at least once in the abdomen
while sitting in his car.
The police already were in route to Central Avenue and John Street after
people in the area alerted them about 11:45 a.m. that a fight had broken
out, according to police.
When police arrived, they found the victim trying to leave the park. The
man was treated at the scene by East Providence EMTs before being
transported to the hospital. The park, located a short distance from City
Hall, is one of several in the East Providence Parks network, which
includes 15 neighborhood parks and playgrounds
Located between Central Ave and McCausland Avenue, the Onna Moniz John
Park is described as a neighborhood park with plenty of shade trees, the
Central Avenue playground for kids 5 to 12 years of age, and a basketball
