John J. Callahan, Jr.
CUMBERLAND - John J. Callahan, Jr., 86, of Cumberland, passed away Monday April 21, 2014. He was the husband of Dorothy (Holmes) Callahan. They were happily married for 64 years. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late John and Theresa (Scanlon) Callahan.
Mr. Callahan was a World War II Army veteran. John lived in Pawtucket before moving to Cumberland 20 years ago. He was a letter carrier from the Pawtucket Post Office for 35 years, retiring in 1986.
He was past president of the National Association of Letter Carriers, Pawtucket Chapter. He was active in his church and community as a member of the Knights of Columbus, Delaney Council, the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and he also spent many years coaching his sons and their friends in CYO basketball and Darlington Little League.
John will be remembered by all for his love of family, giving unselfish care to his parents, his siblings, his wife, children and grandchildren, and serving as the inspiration to generations past and present. He will be loved, missed and remembered always.
Besides his wife, he is survived by 4 children, Colleen Callahan and her husband Robert Delaney, Lynne Collinson and her husband James, Gary Callahan and his partner Patti Dembinski, and John J. Callahan III and his wife Michele; 11 grandchildren - Rebecca, Scott, Matthew, Andrew, Tracy, Keri, Meagan, Christopher, Ashley, Andrew and Lennan and 7 great-grandchildren.
He was the brother of the late Leo and Donald Callahan.
The funeral will be held Friday at 9am from the O'Neill Funeral Home, 3102 Mendon Road, Cumberland, RI, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am in Saint Joan of Arc Church, 3357 Mendon Road, Cumberland. Burial with military honors will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours Thursday 4-7pm.
