PROVIDENCE â€” Standing on the steps of the Statehouse, Terry Gorman told a small rally riday that if buses filled with immigrant children from Central America were rolling in Rhode Island, â€śI would lay down in front of those buses.â€ť
As the three dozen or so protesters cheered and shouted â€śMe, too,â€ť he added, â€śbecause I believe that would be the destruction of the state of Rhode Island.â€ť
The hastily-assembled rally was called to urge Gov. Lincoln Chafee to reject any request from the federal government to accept any of the tens of thousands of immigrants â€“ many of them young children â€“ who are flooding across the border to escape from poverty and violence in places like El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.
