Howell J. Smith Jr.
PAWTUCKET - Howell J. Smith Jr., of Pawtucket, passed away on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA. He was the husband of Janet Cosimini Smith for 62 years. Howell was born in Central Falls the son of the late Howell and Margaret (Little) Smith, Sr.
As a founder of Howell Smith Druggist, he has been serving the Pawtucket community since it opened in 1938 by his father. In 1966, Howell and his wife, Janet, modernized the pharmacy to what it is today, and his son, Howell Smith III, will carry on the family business.
Howell graduated St. Raphael Academy before serving his country as a Medic in the Naval Medical Corp. during World War II. After returning home, he graduated from the Rhode Island College of Pharmacy ('49) and became a lifelong member of the RI Pharmaceutical Association.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Leslie Hatch of Montclair, NJ, Joyce Cote of Portsmouth, RI, Howell Smith III of Seekonk and Gregory Smith of Lincoln. He also leaves eleven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral for Mr. Smith will be Monday at 9:00 am from the MANNING-HEFFERN FUNERAL HOME, 68 Broadway, Pawtucket, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Cecilia's Church, Newport Ave., Pawtucket at 10:00 am. Burial will be in Mt. St. Mary's Cemetery. The calling hours will be Sunday 2-6 pm in the funeral home.
