Garage gets go-ahead

April 8, 2014

PAWTUCKET—Following a two-part hearing on a contentious issue, the Board of Appeals on Monday voted 5 to 0 to approve a variance allowing for an oversized garage on Sharon Avenue property belonging to the Grupo Amigos Da Terceira.
The garage, to be built on property at 125 Sharon Ave., will reportedly be used to store vehicles belonging to the Portuguese social club. The main Grupo Amigos community center, at 55 Memorial Dr., is located next door to the white, two-family house at 125 Sharon Ave. where the club intends to construct the new garage.
Grupo Amigos needed to seek dimensional relief for a rear-yard setback in order to build a new garage on the property, which is zoned as Residential Two-Family.
Although not a direct abutter, Robert Miniati, a longtime Cute Street resident, has led a local effort to block the construction of the garage. He helped gather signatures from 39 neighbors opposed to the garage and submitted a petition to the board. He also brought in two attorneys to represent the neighbors who are opposed to the plan.
“I am totally dissatisfied with the board's decision,” Miniati told The Times on Tuesday. “Since April 2013 until this date, I believe there had been a lot of backroom decisions and political influences.” He added that he is undecided at the present time about taking any further action and is waiting for the decision to be officially recorded.
