Cumberland's Crawley named R.I. Gatorade Boys' Cross Country Runner of the Year

CHICAGO --- Cumberland High cross country star Trevor Crawley added another accolade to his accomplishments on Thursday with his selection as the 2012-13 Gatorade Rhode Island Boys’ Cross Country Runner of the Year.
The award not only recognizes outstanding athletic excellent, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the race course.
Crawley, a senior, raced to the All-State Meet’s individual state championship this past season in a time of 15:39.47 that helped the Clippers earn a fifth-place finish in the team standings and Crawley repeat as a First-Team All-State selection by the Rhode Island Track Coaches Association.
Crawley, who before that meet, won the Class A individual title in 15:52.20, went on to take second place at the New England Championships in a 16:14.21 time, sixth at the Foot Locker Northeast Regional Championships in 15:47.3, and 38th at the Foot Locker National Championships.
Also a talented distance runner on the Clippers’ indoor and outdoor track and field teams, Crawley has maintained a B average in the classroom. In addition to participating in the National Guard’s youth leadership program, Crawley has volunteered on behalf of the town’s recreation department as a youth track and soccer instructor.
He remains undecided upon a collegiate destination.
“Trevor is a very dedicated, internally motivated young man,” reported Cumberland head coach Tom Kenwood. “He wants to win and pushes himself each and every day in practice and races. He is goal-oriented and sets high standards for himself, and so far, he has attained his goals.”
Crawley joins an elite alumni association of past state award-winners in 12 sports, including Kevin Garnett, Derek Jeter, Candace Parker, and another running standout, Ryan Hall. He is also a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys’ Runner of the Year award to be announced later this month.
