Crescent Park’s clam shack is in for some rehab

March 5, 2014

EAST PROVIDENCE – The popular Blount Clam Shack at Crescent Park is getting an extreme makeover.

Located on the grounds of the historic Charles I.D. Looff Carousel on Bullocks Point Avenue, and revered for its giant lobster rolls, creamy chowder and golden fried clams, the tiny clam shack will have a whole new look by summer.

At its meeting Tuesday, the East Providence City Council approved the Crescent Park Carousel Commission’s proposal to repair and renovate the clam shack, which includes $50,000 to bring the building up to code, as required by the state Board of Health. The project, to begin this spring, will also make the building more functional and the grounds more appealing.

“The health department has taken a look at what we’ve got and there’s no question there needs to be some repairs,” acting City Manager Paul Lemont told the council Tuesday.

The repairs will be paid for by Warren-based seafood wholesaler Blount Fine Foods, which has also agreed to negotiate a new 10-year lease extension with the Crescent Park Carousel Commission. Blount also operates clam shacks in Warren, Providence and Fall River.
