PAWTUCKET - Barbara A. Hurley, 87, died peacefully Saturday December 14, 2013 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Paul T. Hurley Sr.
Born in Pawtucket she was a daughter of the late Peter and Mary (Mastalerz) Niemiec. She lived in Pawtucket for most of her life and spent summers on Cape Cod.
Barbara earned her Bachelor's degree in business from Bryant College, graduating first in her class and her Masters degree in guidance and childhood education from Rhode Island College. Before retiring in 1987 she was a kindergarten teacher at Agnes Little School in Pawtucket for thirty years. Her love of learning continued after she retired leading her to take classes at local colleges and spend a semester studying at The University of Krakow in Poland. She was a member of the Blackstone Valley and Rhode Island Retired Teachers Associations and Delta Kappa Gamma. She served as Treasurer for the Pawtucket Women's Club. She was also a volunteer at Pawtucket Memorial Hospital. She had two passions in life: reading and traveling. She was involved with the Royal Travelers and she traveled extensively with groups of friends, with her daughter and on solo adventures until just recently. Barbara's most cherished memories were of the many trips she took with her granddaughter Laura E. Caron.
She leaves a daughter Debra L. Hurley of Seekonk, a son Dr. Robert P. Hurley of Connecticut, one sister Josephine Johnston of Lincoln, nine grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by seven siblings. She was the mother of the late Paul T. Hurley Jr. and the grandmother of the late Matthew R. Caron.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday December 19, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in Holy Cross Church 320 High Street Central Falls. Relatives and friends are welcome to attend. PLEASE OMIT FLOWERS. Memorial Donations to The Tomorrow Fund at Hasbro Children's Hospital 593 Eddy Street Providence, RI 02903 would be greatly appreciated. Burial will be private.
