PAWTUCKET — A Pawtucket man was fatally shot early Friday morning behind the Nathanael Greene Elementary School on Smithfield Avenue, police said.
Police said the victim, identified yesterday as 20-year-old Joshua Burgo of Pawtucket, was shot in the chest at around 2:58 a.m. He was taken by ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
According to police reports, Burgo was found lying in the parking lot in back of the 285 Smithfield Avenue school with a gunshot wound to the chest.
Burgo, who was from the Broadway section of the city, was reportedly with a group of people gathered behind Pawtucket Fire Station 5 when he was shot. Police say some of those people stayed with Burgo after he was shot. Those shots were heard by firefighters, who were just returning from a call. A firefighter at the scene attempted to resuscitate Burgo using CPR, but he never regained consciousness.
Authorities had to wait for an ambulance to come from another station, because fire officials said the nearby Smithfield Avenue Fire Station does not have one.
The homicide is being investigated by detectives of the Pawtucket Police Department's Major Crime Unit. So far, no arrests have been made.
Anyone with information is asked to contact lead investigators Detectives Donti Rosciti or David Silva at (401) 727-9100 .
The Nathanael Greene Elementary School is located in the Fairlawn neighborhood of Pawtucket. The 93-year-old school houses 569 students who attend kindergarten through grade six at Nathanael Greene.
Burgo's murder is the second homicide in the city this year and the shooting is the second in the city over the past month.
The city's first homicide ocurred in January when 28-year-old Pawtucket man Richard C. Cruz was found stabbed on the sidewalk at the intersection of Main and School streets - near the old Apex building.
Cruz was found unconscious and suffering from several stab wounds.
He was rushed to Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Last month, Pawtucket police said a man was shot in the leg while standing in front of a home. The 29 year-old man from Central Falls was shot in the right leg in front of 48 Woodlawn St. at about 8:10 p.m. He was with several other people in the driveway when he was hit.
The injury was not considered life-threatening and he was taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence for treatment.
