Shea High School | Twins Arianna and Ariel Davey's love for tennis has helped pair work way to top of team ladder

PAWTUCKET  –  Twin sisters Arianna and Ariel Davey have excelled as members of the Shea High girls' tennis team over the past four years for a variety of reasons.

First and foremost, they happened upon their athletic endeavor of choice almost by accident, but it turned into a boon for their skill development.

Two years ago, the Rhode Island high-school football officials were part of a landmark decision that saw the R.I. Principals’ Committee on Athletics (PCOA) award the officiating contract to a Massachusetts group.

As painful as the decision was, it enabled the R.I. officials to purge a system that in the eyes of many had grown stale, i.e. featuring too many officials who for one reason or another did not merit being on the field.

Such a cleansing was met with good timing.

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – The final Saturday in August brought mixed emotions as it marked the last time the New Britain Rock Cats would take the field under the home lights.

The finish line has been crossed for a franchise that is ending a 33-year-old relationship between minor-league baseball and the “Hardware City.”  The process of turning over a new leaf will be complete next April when the Hartford Yard Goats start playing games in a ballpark located in Connecticut’s capital city.

PAWTUCKET – Injury Fund scrimmages are little more than a dress rehearsal for the upcoming football season. Players get into their uniforms, board a bus and head to the scrimmage location, slug it out for two quarters with a rival school, and then head home, elated by the opportunity to block and tackle someone other than their own teammates.

PAWTUCKET  –  New St. Raphael Academy head coach Andre Martins couldn't have been more succinct in describing his squad's satisfying 5-2 Division III-A victory over Cranston East on Friday afternoon.

“Good stuff!” he told the Saints as they relaxed on the home sideline grass at McKinnon-Alves Complex during the post-game chat.

That pretty much summed up St. Raphael's torrid attack on the Thunderbolts, one in which the hosts outshot their foes, 16-6, and in the process lifted the Saints to 1-1 in league action.

PAWTUCKET – In the interest of accuracy, the conversation with PawSox manager Kevin Boles started out about the working relationship his father John had with Dave Dombrowski when the pair formed a manager-general manager tandem with the Florida Marlins.

For the purpose of this exercise, the original topic hardly seemed to matter, as it resulted in traveling down several roads that helped to shed light on Dombrowski’s relationship with the minors.

PAWTUCKET  –  Now 22, Graham Watkins of Woodlawn has been relegated to a wheelchair since his toddler days, that due to a congenital spinal cord injury.

Still, he never allowed his physical disability to interfere with his love for sports. Over the years, he has taken part in a variety of wheelchair and like activities, among them skiing, hockey and track.

LINCOLN — Signed by the Garden State Grays just two weeks ago, RHP John Tangherlini, a native Rhode Islander and Lincoln High School graduate, is making some big impressions in the big-league environment that is the Canadian American Association of Professional Baseball, an independent league with teams in the northeastern United States and Canada.

After all, the 24-year old has baseball in his blood.
