PAWTUCKET – It’s a good thing that Pawtucket’s Game Three starter, Henry Owens, flew out ahead of time. The PawSox and Bulls went 11 innings and four-hours plus Wednesday night at McCoy Stadium with Durham grabbing Game Two, 3-2.

Durham pushed across the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th as Mike Fontenot singled in Vince Belnome with one down. The deciding base knock came against John Ely, who was removed from the contest in the 11th with an apparent arm injury.

McGair: A look at a mixed night for PawSox pitcher Anthony Ranaudo

May 5, 2014

bmcgair@pawtuckettimes.com

PAWTUCKET – For five innings Monday night, Anthony Ranaudo was on easy street. Or so it seemed.

Yes, Ranaudo held the Toledo Mud Hens off the scoreboard through five frames, yet an interesting development took place in the fifth that may help explain why the tall right-hander struggled in the sixth inning.

As much as Ranaudo’s fastball was working earlier in the contest, it disappeared in the fifth. Luckily, he was able to dip into his breaking pitches, most notably his curveball, and work his way around a leadoff walk.

McGair: Addition of Daniel Nava part of a busy afternoon for the PawSox

bmcgair@pawtuckettimes.com

PAWTUCKET – Daniel Nava is officially a member of the Pawtucket Red Sox. The struggling outfielder/first baseman joined the Triple-A ranks on what was a busy Friday at McCoy Stadium.

Manager Kevin Boles wasted little time of throwing Nava into the fray, placing the switch hitter in the No. 3 spot in the outfield and in left field. Nava is looking to get back on track after getting off to a .147 start in 17 games for the Red Sox.

PAWTUCKET – Matt Barnes will not be part of Pawtucket’s rotation at the onset of the 2014 International League season. A sore shoulder limited the 23-year-old to just one inning in spring training.

Just how much time will Barnes miss? Red Sox Director of Player Development Ben Crockett didn’t provide a definitive timetable at Tuesday’s PawSox Media Day fete at McCoy Stadium, though it was encouraging to learn that the Barnes is pitching in extended spring training down in Fort Myers, Fla.

McGair: UNC's Williams speaks highly about PC's Cotton

March 21, 2014

bmcgair@pawtuckettimes.com

SAN ANTONIO – In his final game in a PC Friar uniform, Bryce Cotton made a fan in North Carolina head coach Roy Williams.

After watching Cotton torch his Tar Heels for 36 points, Williams pointed out, “I’ve coached a long time, guys. I’ve had a lot of people play great against me. Lindsey Hunter is an NBA coach, he got 47 points against us one year. Anthony Peeler of Virginia got like 45 against us one night, and we won the game. We held Big Country, Bryant Reeves, to zero and Randy Rutherford got 43, but we won the game.”

McGair: More on the value of PC's training staff

March 8, 2014

By BRENDAN McGAIR
bmcgair@pawtuckettimes.com

If there’s one thing I regret about the article regarding the yeoman’s work on the part of Providence College’s athletic training staff, it’s that there’s no quotes from Ken White, the school’s strength coach.

Like head athletic trainer Bryn VanPatten, White has been plying his trade at PC for some time – he’s currently in his 10th year at the college. One quote that didn’t make the article - http://www.woonsocketcall.com/node/10821 - should help shed some light on the working relationship between VanPatten and White.
