Could Donaldson, Lynch tourneys be merged?

PAWTUCKET – Jim Hoyt, the CEO of the Pawtucket Boys & Girls Club, has a vision of taking the two existing preseason boys’ basketball tournaments in the city – the James W. Donaldson Memorial Tournament and the Dennis M. Lynch Memorial Tournament – and combining the tradition each one represents. The end result would be an all-inclusive tournament that would serve as the perfect wet-your-whistle appetizer for league play.

PC's Brooks named Big East Player of Week

PROVIDENCE – Since the Big East expanded to 16 teams in 2005, taking home Player of the Week kudos has been an honor normally doled out to All-American candidates/NBA prospects. With that in mind, it’s not every day a Providence College player is bestowed with the conference’s top weekly award.
Monday saw the Big East lavish Player of the Week praise upon PC senior Marshon Brooks. The swingman averaged 31.3 points and 8.7 rebounds in three games last week, leading the Friars to a 2-1 mark.

CENTRAL FALLS- Denise R. King 57, of Dexter Street passed away Tuesday December 7, 2010 at the Miriam Hospital in Providence.
Born in Central Falls she was a daughter of the late Stanley and Rita (Fontaine) Szwed. She was a life long resident of Central Falls.
Denise was employed as a Receptionist for Lincoln Urgent Care.
She was the loving mother of Glenna King of Central Falls and Dennis G. King and his wife Dawn of Fall River, MA. She also leaves 3 cherished granddaughters. She was the beloved companion of Patrick J. Szlashta Jr. of Central Falls.

CENTRAL FALLS- Mary A. Devaney 100, formerly of Perry Street passed away Saturday December 11, 2010 at Eastgate Nursing and Recovery Center in East Providence. She was the beloved wife of the late John W. Devaney.
Born in Oxford, MA she was a daughter of the late Walenty and Anna (Szymanski) Kaczynski. She lived in Central Falls most of her life.
Before retiring she was employed by the former J.P. Coats Inc. for 8 years and later for the former Central Braid as a Supervisor for 40 years. She was a communicant of Holy Spirit Catholic Community of Central Falls.

CENTRAL FALLS. Gladys Sartini 90, of Fletcher Street, passed into eternal rest on Sunday after a long illness. She was the wife of the late Edward Sartini Sr.
She was born in Pawtucket a daughter of the late William B. and Carrie (Taylor) Hotchkiss. She lived all of her life in Central Falls.

PAWTUCKET - Charles E. Calverley, 80, of Gill Avenue in Pawtucket, formerly of Park Street and Young Street in Pawtucket, died on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at the Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island in Pawtucket. He was the longtime loving husband of Margaret A. (Burchard)Calverley, to whom he was married on April 27, 1957 at the Sacred Heart Church in East Providence.
Born in Providence on March 30, 1930, he was the son of the late Frederick Calverley and Nellie (Kilburn) Calverley. He was a 1948 graduate of Hope High School in Providence.

Change of seasons for SRA, Woonsocket players

High school football and basketball seasons tend to blend together these days. Super Bowl games are contested in early December while basketball teams practice without a few key players, waiting for point guards and forwards to put down the pigskin and pick up the roundball.
When Woonsocket and St. Raphael Academy met in the Dennis M. Lynch Memorial Tournament championship game on Saturday night, several football players from each school were trying to shake off the rust and get into the flow of their winter sport.

CENTRAL FALLS — Minutes before the Central Falls Fire Department's Engine 2 arrived in front of the Holy Spirit Parish at approximately 9:30 a.m., Saturday — with Fire Chief Rene R. Coutu's American flag-draped casket laying on the hose bed — State Rep. Elizabeth “Betty” Crowley stood on the church steps, explaining exactly what he meant to her.

Seven-month-old Jack Crossley, of Cumberland, doesn't quite know what to make of his very first visit with Santa during the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony, hosted by Cumberland Mayor Daniel J. McKee at Cumberland Town Hall Friday evening. Family and friends gathered around to take pictures. Little Jack didn't seem to mind all the attention.

Grand jury indicts several residents

PAWTUCKET — A Providence County grand jury on Thursday handed up several indictments involving local residents, including one for a Pawtucket man accused in the beating death of his girlfriend last summer.
Armando Garcia, 31, of 468 Mineral Spring Ave., Pawtucket, is accused of killing 30-year-old Brooke Lee Verdoia last June in a violent domestic disturbance at her house at 17 Rufus St. in Pawtucket. Verdoia's two-year-old child was asleep in the house at the time of the incident.

Tolman takes home Donaldson Tournament title

PAWTUCKET — Tolman and Shea put on quite a show for the fans on Friday night during the championship game of the James W. Donaldson Memorial Tournament.
The Tigers and Raiders went toe-to-toe in the second half as Shea rallied to take a 44-43 lead with 1:42 left in the game. Tolman responded with a pair of steals that iced a 48-45 victory.

Born on February 8, 1927 in Esmolfe, Penalva do Castelo, Portugal, he was the son of the late Jose Lopes and Miquelina de Campos.

LINCOLN - Elsie E. Evans 95 died Wednesday at the Hallworth House, Providence. She was the wife of the late Irving E. Evans. They were married for seventy years.
Born in Cumberland a daughter of the late Daniel and Sarah Jane (Peters) Partington. She resided in Cumberland most of her life moving to Lincoln in 1978.

PAWTUCKET - Shirley L. Driscoll, 90, passed away Friday, December 10, 2010. She was the wife of the late Daniel Driscoll. Born in Attleboro, MA, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Veronica (Lamb) Cobb. Mrs. Driscoll was a Certified Nursing Assistant for Paquette Nursing Home of Central Falls before retiring. She is survived by seven children, Robert and Gary Bears, Daniel, Sharon, and Paul Driscoll, Angela Gasbarre, and Robin Hulme, eleven grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Susan Kennedy.

CUMBERLAND - Lois F. (Rainey) Jackson, 75, of Mendon Road died Wednesday, December 8, 2010 at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center, Providence. She was the beloved wife of Albert A. Jackson.
Born in Pawtucket, a daughter of the late Charles and Isabelle (Pollock) Rainey, she had lived in Pawtucket for most of her life before moving to Cumberland 12 years ago.
Mrs. Jackson was a bookkeeper at the Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket for 12 years, retiring in 2005.
She was a graduate of Pawtucket West High School.

Saints, Novans reach Lynch hoop finals

PAWTUCKET – It will be two former division rivals squaring off for Lynch Memorial Tournament supremacy come Saturday night.
Woonsocket fought back from a 48-42 deficit with less than three minutes remaining to post a 53-48 triumph over defending champion Central Falls Thursday night in opening round action at the Pawtucket Boys & Girls Club. Woonsocket will now take on St. Raphael, which ran past Providence Country Day, 71-45.

Tolman pops Pilgrim in Donaldson opener

PAWTUCKET – It wouldn’t have felt the same had Tolman not been playing Shea in the championship of the Donaldson Memorial Tournament. Before such a scenario could be crystalized, Tolman had to get past Pilgrim in Thursday’s opening round.
