The Division I Townies will host nearby Division II-B foe Mount Hope at Pierce Field in a showdown that’s sure to attract many East Bay fans.

October 12, 2011

CUMBERLAND — After a little more than an hour on Wednesday afternoon, Cumberland High coach John Jasionowski watched his squad suffer a quick 7-0 loss to Division I power Mount St. Charles Academy.
While most of their matches haven’t been quite as quick, the end result has been status quo for the winless Clippers this fall, owners of an 0-10 mark and last place in I-North. Last year, Cumberland had a similar record in its first season in the state’s toughest division, finishing 2-11 overall.

Ocean State Chorus comes to Pawtucket

October 12, 2011

PAWTUCKET — Everything's better in harmony. And when it comes to singing, the old-fashioned style of “Barbershop” harmony is a proven training ground for honing voice skills.
Earlier this month, the Ocean State Chorus, performing Barbershop harmony, moved to a new home inside St. Paul's Church at 50 Park Place. Established in 1967, the all-male chorus was previously based in Smithfield, but the musical group is now happily part of Pawtucket's downtown arts scene.

SRA's Correa finds his way on gridiron

October 11, 2011

The book on Charles Correa is that he’s a basketball player, a pretty darn good one at that.
Basketball is his passion, his lifeblood. Hopefully basketball will help this youngster land a college scholarship.
Why play football then? Why tempt the fates and risk the future for a sport known for its cutthroat and harsh nature? All it takes is one misstep on the field, absorbing one teeth-rattling hit, one crunch administered by a big, big guy, to change everything.

When the first engine company arrived, firefighters found the two front porches of the house fully engulfed in flames and the air was thick with heavy smoke. A short time later, the entire front porch collapsed off of the house, he said.

‘D’ spurs a ‘W’ for Saints

October 9, 2011

WEST WARWICK — If St. Raphael’s defensive players had a vote, they would like to see their offensive mates grind out one of those keep-the-chains-moving, wind-sapping, 80-yard drives that encompass 15 plays and takes six or seven minutes off the game clock.
Dreamers can keep on dreaming because SRA’s offense is defined by big plays and quick strikes that can happen from any spot on the field. Such firepower is akin to attaching a turbo-charged engine to a Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Local couple conquering marathon before wedding

October 9, 2011

She’ll be wearing a white tennis skirt with a veil on her head and he’ll be wearing shorts and a Tuxedo T-shirt.
About 150 guests have been invited to attend their wedding next weekend, but Geralyn Hoffman and Larry Ducady aren’t planning on getting too dressed up for their big day.
After all, running a race wearing a full tuxedo or a wedding gown isn’t exactly comfortable. Neither is dress shoes or heels.
