Hearing Wednesday night on proposed budget

PAWTUCKET — Wednesday night, residents will have a chance to weigh in on Mayor Donald Grebien's proposed operating budget for the upcoming fiscal year—a spending plan that would require an 80-cent tax increase per $1,000 of assessed valuation for homeowners. A public hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the City Council chambers on the third floor of Pawtucket City Hall at 137 Roosevelt Ave.

PawSox turn away Tides, 5-3

NORFOLK, Va. — The Pawtucket Red Sox broke a 2-2 draw by scoring twice in the top of the seventh inning and held on for a rain-shortened 5-3 victory over the Norfolk Tides on Tuesday afternoon for a split of their four-game series at Harbor Park.
Jonathan Hee led off the seventh with a single to right and Pedro Ciriaco followed with a double to right to put runners in scoring position.
A groundout to shortstop by Jose Iglesias allowed Hee to speed home with the go-ahead run, and Ryan Lavarnway doubled to right to drive in Ciriaco.

CUMBERLAND - Raymond D. Kelleher, 56, of High St. departed this earth and the empire he built on Monday at home.
Born in Central Falls he was the son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Renaud) Kelleher. He was a life long Cumberland resident.
He was an auto body repairman his entire life. Ray was an avid pool player and also loved going to and watching NESC Motocross racing. For many years he could also be seen traveling up and down Broad St. and High St. in his favorite Chevelle.

CENTRAL FALLS - RITA I. Romenski RN 89, passed away Sunday May 20, 2012. She was the loving wife of the late Bernard "BENNY" Romenski.
Born in Pawtucket she was the beloved daughter of the late Cyrias and Aurore (Frechette) Letourneau. She lived in Central Falls for the past 60 years.
She was co-owner and Secretary of the Karol A. Romenski & Sons Funeral Home of Central Falls.
Rita was a Registered Nurse and did private duty nursing for several years. She was a Registered Nurse for 68 years.

Gertrude Milbourne

SEEKONK - Gertrude (Thiemann) Milbourne, 101, formerly of Seekonk, passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2012. She was the beloved wife of the late William Milbourne.
Born in Pawtucket, a daughter of the late Gustave and Maria (Werner) Thiemann, she moved to Seekonk in 1969. Mrs. Milbourne had been employed by Texas Instruments, Attleboro until retiring in 1966, and was previously employed by the former Darlington Textile Company. She was a former member of the Darlington Congregational Church.

CUMBERLAND - Maria Izilda (Rebelo) Rodrigues, 82, of Forest Ave., passed away Monday at the Memorial Hospital, Pawtucket. She was the wife of the late Jose Rodrigues.
Born in Quintal, Portugal she was the daughter of the late Luis and Maria (Jose) Rebelo. Mrs. Rodrigues came to this country in 1970 settling in Cumberland for the past 42 years.
She was a machine operator for the former SpinTex Company for many years, and later was employed by Chadwicks Yarn Company until her retirement.
She was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Cumberland.

Savastano 'honored' to helm Tolman

PAWTUCKET — It's official: an assistant principal at Middletown High School who began his career as a mathematics teacher will take over the helm of the William E. Tolman High School starting July 1.
Christopher Savastano, of Jamestown, was unanimously appointed as principal by the School Committee at its May 15 meeting. Savastano was the top choice of Schools Supt. Deborah Cylke and a search committee, and he was also interviewed by the School Committee.

Cumberland High to honor its best

CUMBERLAND — The Cumberland school community will come together May 29 to honor the 35 students who finished in the the top 10 percent of their graduating class .
Those students include Cumberland High School Class of 2012 Valedictorian Katilyn S. Krajanowski and Salutatorian Gabriella K. Cottiero.
The top 10 graduates will be honored at the annual Cumberland High School Distinguished Scholars Ceremony to be held Tuesday, May 29 at 9:15 a.m. in the front foyer of the high Shhool.

ATTLEBORO - Roger R. Paille, 72, of Richard Street, Attleboro, passed peacefully on Sunday, May 20, 2012 in the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center, Providence, Rhode Island. He was the beloved husband of Donna M. (Chagnon) Paille.

Born in Attleboro on June 24, 1939, he was a son of Lou (Raposa) Paille and the late Raymond Paille. Roger was educated in Attleboro schools and was a member of the Sea Scouts in earlier days.

Valmore L. LaFontaine

NORTH ATTLEBORO - Valmore L. LaFontaine, 80, formerly of North Attleboro, died on Sunday. He was the husband of 37 years of the late Joyce Marie (Arnold) LaFontaine.
Born in Pawtucket on March 25, 1932, he was a son of the late Valmore L. and Blanche Mary (Gavlick) LaFontaine. Raised in South Attleboro, he was a graduate of St. Raphael Academy, College of Holy Cross and earned his Master's in Education from Providence College.

Raymond R. Degre

PAWTUCKET - Raymond R. Degre, 71 of Pawtucket died Friday at the Miriam Hospital surrounded by his wife and seven children. He was the husband of Ruth (St. Jean) Degre.
Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late Hormisdas and Jeannette (Fontaine) Belanger, and stepson of Norman Belanger. Raymond was a lifelong resident of Pawtucket.
Prior to his retirement he worked as a security guard for Stern Leach Precious Metals in Attleboro.

PAWTUCKET - John J. Maliboski 95, passed away Sunday May 20, 2012 at Landmark Medical Center in Woonsocket. He was the beloved husband of Mary B. (Valente) Maliboski.
Born in Central Falls he was a son of the late Joseph and Frances (Golis) Maliborski. He lived in Pawtucket for the past 60 years.
Before retiring John was employed by Buckley and Scott Heating and Oil Co. as a Boiler Technician for many years.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII and Korea serving as a Sergeant First Class.

CUMBERLAND - Frances P. Lowe, 82, passed away Saturday in the Memorial Hospital, Pawtucket. She was the beloved wife of the late Walter Lowe Sr.
Born in Pawtucket she was the daughter of the late Bartalo and Angelina (Day) Pino. She resided in Cumberland for the past 50 years.
She was a supervisor at the senior housing at 1 Mendon Rd., Cumberland for 10 years. Mrs. Lowe was also a member of the St. Aidan Seniors.

PAWTUCKET - O'MALLEY, Hilda (Botelho) formerly of West Lawn Ave. Pawtucket died May 20, 2012 in Providence. She was the wife of the late Gordon Lewis and Eugene O'Malley.
She was born in Fall River, MA a daughter of the late Manuel and Maria (Silva) Botelho. She is survived by several nieces and nephews and stepchildren. She was the sister of the late Irene Medeiros, Manuel, Herman, James, Joseph and Serafin Botelho.

SMITHFIELD - Irene G. (Mello) Coia, 88, a resident of North Bay Manor, passed away on Friday, May 18, 2012. She was the beloved wife of Julio C. Coia and daughter of the late Joseph E. and Agnes (Tavares) Mello.
A kind and gentle woman, Irene found her greatest joy in cooking, dancing and surrounded by her family.

EAST PROVIDENCE — Nine-year-old Andrew Smyth of East Greenwich stared down at X Games' nine-time BMX medalist Kevin Robinson autographing his white T-shirt in heavy blue ink. When the elder had finished, he flashed a grin at his mom, Stacey.
The boy had never before met Robinson, and couldn't believe his good fortune when the 40-year-old athlete and East Providence native posed with him for a photo.
Robinson immediately hugged Stacey and thanked her for attending his second annual “Ride with K-Rob/Family Fun Festival,” held at Rose Larisa Park on Riverside's tip Sunday afternoon.
