High school football | Raiders hope to maintain stingy ways in Div. II semifinals

PAWTUCKET — In these sudden-death Division II playoffs, Shea High has written a life insurance policy funded by its defensive unit, an aggressive group of athletes who follow their assignments on each play and eschew individualistic efforts.


The Raiders were the only team in last weekend’s quarterfinals who held their opponent under 20 points. Unbeaten North Kingstown yielded 49 points in a loss to Coventry. Unbeaten St. Raphael gave up 33 to Johnston in its stunning upset.

College basketball | Friars' Dunn working his way back into form

PROVIDENCE — Kris Dunn believes he has unburdened himself from the fear of injury in a basketball setting. That’s no small admittance when you consider how much time the Providence College sophomore has missed in each of the last two seasons.

“I don’t think about my shoulder or anything. I don’t have jitters,” Dunn said. “I’m just excited to play once again because it’s been a while. I want to play well for everybody. I’ve just got to let everything come.”

Girls' hockey | Game on for Lincoln/Cumberland girls' co-op hockey

There will be a Lincoln/Cumberland girls’ hockey team taking the ice for the 2014-15 season.

The news became official Tuesday night during separate special meetings of the Cumberland and Lincoln school committees. Cumberland voted to pay Lincoln the money that it owed from the last two seasons and to move forward with the same cooperative agreement in place for the upcoming campaign.

High school sports | Changes coming to R.I. interscholastic baseball scene

•PROVIDENCE – The landscape in Rhode Island interscholastic baseball is going to look vastly different over the next two years.

At Monday’s meeting of the R.I. Principals’ Committee on Athletics, the board voted 15-1 in favor of implementing a two-year baseball realignment proposal that would feature 22 teams in Division I and the restoration of a third division for the first time since 2006. Division III would be comprised of 11 teams with local representation including Shea, Central Falls, Burillville and Davies Tech.

LINCOLN – The common denominator among Lincoln High varsity softball teammates Stacey Mayer and Adriana Toro and baseball standout Mason Palmieri on Thursday afternoon was this: Utter relief.

For months or even years now, the trio of seniors had been sure as to where they would further their academic and athletic educations, but admitted to feeling “stressed out.” The reason: They couldn't wait to make it official.

PAWTUCKET  –  Whatever good will had been displayed over the previous two-plus hours quickly evaporated at the end of the R.I. Division II Tournament quarterfinal clash between Shea-Mount Pleasant on Friday night.

St. Raphael Academy Football | STUNNED – Saints knocked out by Johnston, 33-31

PAWTUCKET – Johnston High pulled off the upset of the year on Friday night, knocking unbeaten St. Raphael Academy out of the Division II playoffs with a stunning 33-31 victory at Pariseau Field.

Johnston utilized the Wing-T offense formerly favored by the host Saints and tore holes in the SRA defense. Halfback Marc Conte ran for two touchdowns and scored another on a pick-six interception to spark the Panthers, who came into the game with a 3-4 league record. The Saints were 7-0.

Tolman senior Leiandra Wilson is all smiles as she gets ready to take part in a signing ceremony at the high school Wednesday afternoon. Wilson signed her letter of intent to attend Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire on a softball scholarship.

In a perfect world, Pawtucket would be the epicenter of interscholastic Division II football this week with Shea, Tolman and St. Raphael all gearing up for the postseason. Alas, the reality is that just two of the three schools are in the equation.

The Division II brackets were finalized and released Sunday with Shea and St. Raphael learning their respective quarterfinal-round opponents. High school football enthusiasts in the city have been presented with a conundrum as the Raiders and Saints each have home games Friday night at 7 p.m.

CUMBERLAND – It’s hard to believe Saturday night’s Division I playoff match between unbeaten Shea High and La Salle Academy was just a semifinal round contest. All of the trappings suggested this contest meant everything to all involved. The stands and running track at Tucker Field were filled with more than 300 rabid fans who gave off as much energy as the players and coaches roaming the ersatz turf.

PAWTUCKET – The well-oiled football machine that is St. Raphael Academy finished off an unbeaten Division II-A schedule with a 42-0 victory over Woonsocket on Friday night at Pariseau Field.
