Shea, Tolman to share pool facility

PAWTUCKET – It's the time of year when interscholastic coaches begin preparing their respective squads for the winter season, and Kim Hewson, the Shea High head swimming coach, was one of them on Tuesday.

He stood on the deck explaining to a few of his more inexperienced aquatic Raiders the nuances of proper stroke and rotary breathing techniques: that is, how the hands should slice the water, not slap it; how the body should rotate in order to breathe correctly to either side; how to close the fingers and turn them down slightly to create a “paddle” for each stroke.

Block: RI must be fixed up

Declaring that “I have watched Rhode Island’s elected officials run this state into the ground,” Ken Block says he wants to be governor “so I can fix an avoidable catastrophe.”

Block, who recently became a Republican after abandoning the Moderate Party of RI that he founded just over four years ago, believes that Rhode Island is in such poor shape that, “If we don’t fix it shortly, there won’t be recovery from where we are.”

PAWTUCKET- Andrade, Gloria, 89, of West Lawn Avenue, Pawtucket passed away at Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center in Providence on December 2, 2013. She was the wife of the late John Andrade.
Gloria was born in Pawtucket, the daughter of the late Antonio and Umbelina (Almeida) Pita.
Ms. Andrade was a lifetime resident of Pawtucket and worked for many years at the Fram Corporation until retiring.

Laura was born in Attleboro, MA, the daughter of the late Donald and Katherine (Bohannon) Salisbury.

SOUTH ATTLEBORO- Gertrude (Corneau) Dube, 85, passed peacefully on December 2nd. She was the wife of the late Raymond E. Dube,
Born in Rehoboth, MA, and raised in Central Falls, she was a daughter of the late Amedee J. and Hortense Z. (Fournier) Corneau.
She had been employed by Texas Instruments for 31 years before retiring. Gertrude and her late husband were members of the Royal Travelers.

PAWTUCKET- Javier Mendez, "Jay" 36, passed unexpectedly on December 1st. He was the husband of Jessica (Cote) Mendez.
Born in Pawtucket, he was the son of John and Carmen Andino of Central Falls.
He had been employed by CAPCO for several years.
Besides his wife and parents he is survived by five children, Jordan, Jaylen, Shayna, Isaac and Mia Mendez, three brothers, Gabriel Mendez, John Andino and Jorge Esquilyn, his maternal grandmother, Guillermina Dominquez, a niece, nephews, aunts, uncles and dear friends.

PAWTUCKET - Laramee, Shirley Eileen (Davis), 83, a longtime resident of Pawtucket, RI passed away Sunday November 17, 2013 with family at her side. She was the wife of the late Bernard Laramee. Born in Pawtucket, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Irene (Grenier) Davis.
Shirley retired from Apex and was the former co-proprietor of M F Graham and Son Monuments.

PAWTUCKET- Edna Mae Perron, 73, left to be with the Lord November 30, 2013 surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife and best friend of Robert A. Perron for 57 years.
Edna was born in Warren, RI on November 21, 1940 and raised in Pawtucket.
She was the daughter of the late George E. and Mary E. (LaVertue) Trombley and the sister of the late George Trombley and Shirley Matteson.

The Times, in partnership with the LeFoyer/The Fountain Street Grille, is hosting the “Jingle Mingle,” an evening of socializing, great food and dancing that is open to all members of the local community. The event will be held on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 7-11 p.m. at the LeFoyer/The Fountain Street Grille, 151 Fountain St., Pawtucket.
Proceeds from the Jingle Mingle will be entered into The Times annual Merry Christmas Fund, which is donated to The Salvation Army of Pawtucket.

URI AD hopes to have new football coach in place by middle of the month

WARWICK – If everything shakes out according to Thorr Bjorn’s plan, the University of Rhode Island will have a new football head coach in place by the middle of the month.

Speaking about the ongoing search to find Joe Trainer’s successor at a college basketball luncheon held at the Radisson Hotel, Bjorn stated that the official job posting in accordance with state requirements took place Monday. The Rams' athletic director noted that such a step must take place before interviewing prospective candidates.

Teacher faces sex assault charge

PAWTUCKET—A substitute teacher who was working at Slater Junior High School last week was arrested on Wednesday after a female student alleged that he had touched her inappropriately.
Warren Tassone, 22, of 180 Rounds Ave., Providence, was charged with second-degree child molestation (forcible fondling), according to police.

PAWTUCKET- Lucille T. (Doyle) Dowling, 83, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 1, 2013. She was the beloved wife of George W. Dowling for 63 years.
Born in Providence, the daughter of the late James and Beatrice (Jordin) Doyle.
Lucille lived in East Providence for 51 years before moving to Pawtucket. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed knitting, crocheting and reading. Lucille was a member of the Trinity Club Women's Auxiliary and a former volunteer at Sacred Heart Parish in East Providence.

PAWTUCKET- Robert A. Pelletier, 84, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 27, 2013. He was the beloved husband of the late Barbara J. (Kelly) Pelletier.
Born in Pawtucket, he was a son of the late Louis and Sarah (Adams) Pelletier.
Robert was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and he worked as a draftsman and designer at FRAM, East Providence, until retiring in 1991.

PROVIDENCE- Dorothy M. Alker, 102, of Benefit Street died Friday, November 29, 2013 at Hallworth House, Providence.
Born in Pawtucket, a daughter of the late William E. and Agnes (Shaw) Alker, she had lived in Pawtucket for 45 years and Cranston for 40 years before moving to Providence several years ago.
Miss Alker was the executive secretary to the Vice President of the Trust Department of the former Rhode Island Hospital Trust National Bonk, Providence for 40 years before retiring in 1971.

Isabelle was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, aunt and great-aunt who will be sadly missed by all.

She was born in Pawtucket, the daughter of the late Felismino Caetano and Deolinda DeJesus (Morais) Caetano.
Miss Caetano was a seamstress in the textile industry for many years. She was a proud lifelong resident of Pawtucket and an avid Red Sox fan, and was absolutely thrilled when they won the World Series last month.

Downtown theraputic art studio relocates to Hope Artiste Village

PAWTUCKET — PeaceLove Studios has a new home among kindred spirits in Hope Artiste Village.

As Matt Kaplan describes it, the studio he co-founded nearly four years ago with his cousin Jeffrey Sparr as a place to create mental wellness through art has joined the “community of artists” already happily ensconced in the renovated mill complex at 999 Main St.

“There was already a big creative network here, so we think it's a good fit,” he said, of the recent move from the Blackstone Valley Visitors Center downtown.

CENTRAL FALLS — On the surface, Saturday’s Lincoln-Central Falls football game seemed like a battle between two teams finishing off losing seasons. Dig a little deeper, though, and the truth becomes evident. These two teams played with passion and love for the game that went beyond their win-loss records and to the core of why youngsters play football.

“Playing on a frozen field is never fun,” Lincoln senior Giovanni Gray said after his Lions rolled to a 47-8 victory. “But when the sun came out and the field turned to mud, now that was fun!”
