12 robbed at gunpoint

PAWTUCKET — Two men wearing masks and brandishing handguns robbed approximately 12 people who were watching Monday Night Football in a city rental space just after 11 p.m., Monday.
According to Pawtucket Police Maj. Arthur Martins, the suspects had confronted two men who had left the converted mill building, located at 545 Pawtucket Ave. (across the road from Gold's Gym), to smoke cigarettes outside.
The gunmen then ordered them up the stairs to Unit 302, where several people had congregated to watch the NFL tilt between the Pittsburgh Steelers and San Francisco 49ers.

CUMBERLAND - Betty Ann (O'Leary) Drezek, 68, of Abbey Dr. died Sunday, surrounded by loved ones at the Miriam Hospital, Providence. She was the wife of the late Frank P. Drezek Jr.
Born in Pawtucket she was the daughter of Doris A. (Paquette) Bourassa of Cumberland and the late Frank O'Leary and Norman Bourassa. She resided in Cumberland for the past 44 years.

Lincoln - Providence Fire Department Captain Frank A. Reddington, Jr., 53, of Whipple Road died Monday, December 19, 2011 at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center, Providence surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Margaret (McKeon) Reddington. Mr. and Mrs. Reddington were married for 23 years.
Born in Providence, he was a son of retired Pawtucket Police Officer Frank A. Reddington and Ann (Burns) Reddington of Pawtucket. He had lived in Providence for 7 years before moving to Lincoln 16 years ago.

LINCOLN – Joe Handy has been coaching long enough to know that when you take over a program for the first time the transition period isn’t always going to be easy. With a new coach and a new system, it’s not always going to be smooth.
In his first year at Davies Tech after two decades at Central Falls, including 10 as the head coach, Handy experienced one of those lumps on Monday.

CUMBERLAND - Roger N. Brochu, 66, of Marshall Avenue Cumberland, died Sunday at the Home and Hospice Care of RI.
He was born in Attleboro a son of the late Gaetan N. & Dorothy (Robinson) Brochu.
Roger was the owner of the Home Town Reality, and also the Remax Executives, he was also a Real Estate Salesman for many years.
He has lived in Cumberland for over 10 years.
Mr. Brochu was a parishioner of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus, Church in South Attleboro.
He was a sports enthusiast, who liked the New England Patriots, the Boston Red Sox, and Boston Celtics.

PAWTUCKET - Edward Zielinski, 86, passed away Saturday, December 17, 2011. He was the beloved husband of the late Marion T. (Comstock) Zielinski.
Born in Central Falls, a son of the late Andrew and Johanna (Nindas) Zielinski, he resided in Pawtucket most of his life. Ed was a World War II U.S. Army Air Corps veteran. He was a lab technician at Teknor-Apex until retiring in 1990.

CUMBERLAND - Edward J. Carpenter Jr., 57, of Doire Rd. died Saturday in R. I. Hospital, Providence. He was the beloved husband of the late Kathleen A. (Doire)Carpenter.
Born in Pawtucket he was the son of Anne (DeCiantis) Carpenter of North Port, FL and Warwick and the late Edward J. Carpenter Sr. He was a life long Cumberland resident.
He was employed in the Engineering Department of Kent Hospital, Warwick for the past 10 years and was previously employed by the former Rizzo Ford Co., North Providence for 17 years.

WOONSOCKET - Norman R. Ponton Sr., 48 of 107 Rathbun Street died Sunday at Landmark Medical Center. He was the husband of Debra M. (Worsley) Ponton to whom he was married for 31 years.
Born in Pawtucket, he is a son of Gilbert R. Ponton Sr. of Central Falls and the late Beatrice (Stay) Ponton. He was an avid Dallas Cowboy Fan and a former member of the Sat. Night Mixed Bowling League at East Providence Lanes.

WESTFIELD, MA - Freda Thomas, 92, died Friday, December 16, 2011 in Westfield, MA. She was born in New York City, NY on July 4, 1919 to Saul and Gertie(Goldberg) Wax. Freda lived most of her life in Pawtucket, RI and graduated from Pawtucket East High School.
She was employed as a salesperson at Peerless Department Store in Pawtucket for over forty years, retiring in 1984. Freda enjoyed knitting, reading, and especially her dog Juno.

SEEKONK - Margaret T. Duffy, 84, of Seekonk and formerly of Pawtucket died Saturday, December 17, 2011. She was the former wife of the late Leo Duffy and the longtime companion of the late Benjamin Woz.
Mrs. Duffy was born in Pawtucket, the daughter of the late John T. Holmes and Edith D. (Durand) Holmes. She owned and operated Frances Beauty Salon for many years. Mrs. Duffy was a charter member of the local 830 Theatrical Wardrobe Union. She was employed by the Providence Performing Arts in their wardrobe department.

LINCOLN - Jeannette M. Benoit, 65, of Lincoln, died Wednesday at Brigham and Womens Hospital, Boston after a courageous battle. She was the wife of Norman P. Benoit. They had been married 43 years. Born in Montreal, Canada, she was a daughter of Marguerite (Bourbonniere) Blier of Smithfield and the late Albert D. Blier.
She is also survived by her sons Michael Benoit and his wife Laurie of N. Smithfield and Christopher Benoit and his wife Lisa of Cumberland, her sister Debra Blier of Morgan, VT and her grandchildren Kyle and Emily Benoit.

PAWTUCKET - May Lauzon, 83, of Pawtucket, died Saturday at Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of William G. Lauzon. They had been married 53 years.
Born in Pawtucket, she was a daughter of the late James and Frances (Lee) Rowe. Mrs.Lauzon was employed as an automobile insurance clerk for Pawtucket Mutual Insurance Co. until her retirement.
She is also survived by her nieces and nephews Kenneth & Deborah Evans, Nicole & Mark Longo and Francesca Longo. She was the sister of the late Thomas, Clarence, Richard, James, Clifford and Betsy Rowe and Frances Evans.

The upstart Tigers gave the JNP Co-Op squad all it could handle before losing 6-5 in overtime on a breakaway goal by Jon Alsfeld.

Cumberland wrestlers rule Lancer Invitational

WILLIMANTIC, Ct. – Cumberland High walked away with the team championship at Saturday’s Lancer Invitational, crowning two individual champions and seeing a third wrestler, Erik Travers, have victory stolen away from him by some sloppy officiating.
Jon Maccini (138) and Tom Lacroix (195) claimed individual titles for the Clippers, who accumulated 220 team points to run away with the title over runnerup Southington (Ct.), which took second place with 166 points.

Cumberland hockey team improves to 5-0

PAWTUCKET — Mike Kinch must consider Lynch Arena his home ice.
The Cumberland High senior, whose family has strong ties to Pawtucket, led the Clippers to a 5-2 victory over the SRA-PCD-Wheeler Co-Op team on Saturday night by scoring two goals and assisting on another.
“Mike’s a strong player who skates well and has a good shot,” Cumberland coach Mark Andreozzi said after the game. Kinch now has six goals and nine assists on the season, putting him near the top of the state in points scored.
